New Orleans, LA – The Dillard Theatre Program at Dillard University will continue its 83rd Historic Season with the Louisiana Premiere of a new play on the indefatigable 19th century female journalist, Miss Ida B. Wells, Ida B. ‘N The Lynching Tree written by Carolyn Nur Wistrand. About the play… Ida B. ‘N The Lynching Tree tells the true story of how Ida B. Wells, born into slavery in 1862, championed freedom of the press to spotlight the atrocities of lynching in the Deep South. Constructed in four historical pageants, the play highlights the courageous, fearless, and militant spirit of the young Ida B. Wells as a schoolteacher and editor of The Free Press in Memphis, Tennessee. The Memphis lynching’s of Tommie Moss, Calvin McDowell, and Henry Stewart in 1892 become the catalyst for her lifelong crusade against lynching and inequities, brought about by Jim Crow laws in the Deep South.
